------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Harrison Smith my GG Grandfather, came from South Carolina to Lumpkin or Cherokee Co Ga in 1846, ACCORDING TO HIS CSA PENSION APPLICATION from the Ga Archives. He married Harriet Elizabeth Taylor April 12, 1848, at the home of her parents based on his original marriage record from the Georgia Archives and the Thomas Harrison Smith family bible. I have copies of the originals. Harriet Elizabeth Taylor was the daughter of William Taylor and Anna Childress from SC to Lumpkin Co Ga.
He was a farmer and land dealer by trade, but dabbled in gold mining. According to older family members, he liked to explore the gold fields in other regions of the country. He named several of his children from places he traveled, gold- rich areas or legendary gold finds of California. He enjoyed his trips as a gold miner. He was educated, could read and write extremely well, based on documents he signed which are in my possession. While in his early 20's he was able to purchase large parcels of land and build or purchase a large home for his family. He is in all the census records for Georgia from 1850-1910 as a farmer, so if he traveled West, I feel it was a one-time trip in the late 1850's.
Thomas Harrison Smith enlisted in The Cherokee Legion Company D Infantry , July 13, 1863 at Shiloa,Ga. He served in the CSA nitre works during his service as a private. This infantry was also known as the Cherokee Repellers."( Film # M226 roll 56)
According to his pension application, he was sent to Col. Findley's Regiment Company A, Oct. 1864. This was supposedly a part of General Barrett's Mounted Militia. He mentions C. Wooford Capt James L. Heard and Joshua A. Dooley being the leaders in his regiment. He surrendered at Atlanta, Ga. he was met by one of the leaders of his company and this was verified in an affidavit. His regiment surrendered at Folkston, Ga.
He was in his 80's, very frail, sick and almost blind when he applied for a CSA pension. Thomas Smith and wife Harriet are buried near their daughter Texas Havanna Smith Bailey at Ophir Baptist Church Cherokee Co Ga.

Thomas Harrison Smith and Harriet Elizabeth Taylor had the following children based on the Smith bible:
1. Margaret Jane Evaline (1850-1914) who married George Ahymus Ledbetter
2. William Joseph Smith (1852-1936) who married Sarah E. Roach, Mary Elizabeth Gilstrap and widow Mary Adeline McGaha
