Josephine was the daughter of William Dörling and Louise Anna Mondl. She was born in New York City and grew up in Ridgefield Park, Bergen County, New Jersey. In 1937, she married William Henry Spellman, Jr. (son of William Henry Spellman, Sr., and Mary Agnes Haley). They had four sons and resided in Ridgefield Park. She was a parishioner of Saint Francis R. C. Church, Ridgefield Park.

She was a wonderful grandmother whose focus in life was her family. A "spunky" woman who would speak her mind. She also made the best german potato salad and apple pie!
