Donald was born to Julia Torgersen and Christian Ephraim Schaugaard. The 10th of eleven children, five boys and six girls, also two stepbrothers, Ezra and Clarence Sorenson.

Married Nola Duffin in the Manti Temple on December 13, 1939.

Donald farmed and raised turkeys for many years. He also logged aspen commercially. He built cabins and summer homes in Fish lake and on the West Mountain. He also worked time to time as a millwright for Geneva Steel and at the Huntington Power Plant in Emery County.

Donald and Nola had seven children: Gaylen J, Kelly Duane, Shauna, Layne, Chris, Michael and Jaclyn.
