The services were conducted by the Rev. S. L. Calwell, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial was in the Davis Cemetery.
The body was accompanied to Athens by a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Elliott of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Also surviving are three others daughter, Mrs. Juanita Faust of Washington, D. c., Mrs. Jess Langston of Albuquerque, and Mrs. G. M. Gomes of El Rita, New Mexico.
Mr. Avant was born on December 14, 1863 in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was a former railroad employee and school teacher, having taught school for around twenty years, many of them in this county. He spent most of his life in New Mexico, the last few years in Albuquerque.
He spent the winter of 1943 at Baxter with his niece, Mrs. Lena Jepson.
