David Michel was born in Brienz 2 October, 1835. He was the youngest child of parents David Michel (12 January 1792 - 07 June 1837) and Anna Fischer Michel (10 March 1799 - 18 May 1862). He married Anna Amacher on 30 October 1857 and they had 10 children together. Their first child, Margarita, died in infancy. David was a woodworker in Brienz. From the memoir of daughter Elizabeth Michel Reeck:

I was four and a half years old when Father died, but still remember him quite well. He used to take brother Mike and me for walks along the lake when he could not work much anymore. I remember him as a very kind father. When we children wanted something, we used to ask him instead of mother, as she sometimes didn't think it necessary to give us our wish. I well remember him on his deathbed as he asked all of us to come so he could bid farewell to us. He was ready to meet God, and told us to be true to God so we could all meet again.
