He married Elizabeth Ogilby Hutchinson on 22 May 1836 at St. Andrew, Lamesley, Co. Durham and the couple had but one child – a daughter, Elizabeth Ann.
Richard died of Scarlet Fever at Harlow Green, Lamesley, on 29 October 1838 aged 50 years. However, he is stated aged 53yrs upon his Death Certificate which is in my possession. The informant of his death was his youngest brother, George Gatiss.
He was buried on 1 November 1838 at St. Andrew, Lamesley by the Revd. John Collinson.
