George Gatiss was born on 22 May 1799 at Penshaw, County Durham the sixth child/fourth son of Thomas Gatiss (1759-1830 a native of Easington Co. Durham) & his wife Ann nee Cole (1759-1835, a Native of Gateshead, Co. Durham). He was baptised on 6 October 1799 at All Saints Church, Penshaw.

His siblings were: John (1785-1811); Richard (1877-1838); Margaret (1790- ); Thomas (1793-1834); Ann (1796-1812):

He married firstly on 2 January 1819 at St. Andrew, Lamesley, Co. Durham to Margaret Cockburn (1802-1839, a native of Winlaton, the d/o Joseph Cockburn & his wife Margaret Dixon). The couple had seven children together, being: Ann (1820- d.bef 1845); John (1821-1862); Elizabeth (1823-1883); Isabella (1827-1888); George (1829- ); Margaret (1832- ):

He married secondly on 31 March 1840 at Heworth Parish Church, Heworth, Co. Durham to the widow Jane Pattison nee Blakey (1794-1853, a native of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England, she the daughter of John Blakey/Blaikie & his wife Mary nee Nixon). George & Jane had no children together.

George's occupation was a Waggon-man (Coal) & in later life a Labourer in a Factory.

He died on or about 8 July 1861 aged 62yrs (his death registration states 64yrs), probably at his daughter Isabella's house in Wallsend, Nbland, with whom he had been residing just prior to his death. He was buried in St. Peter, Wallsend churchyard two days later on 10 July 1861.
