Moses Whisman was born October 21 ,1836 in Breathitt County, Kentucky and died December 8, 1896 in Flatwoods, Lee County, Kentucky. He was the son of McChef (William Michael) Whisman and Isabella (Spencer) Whisman.

He married Gillean Stamper December 3, 1857 at the Cannan Christian Church in Owsley County Kentucky. Gillean Stamper was born May 20,1837 in Breathitt or Wolfe County, Kentucky and died March 1, 1897. She was the daughter of Larkin Stamper and Edith Wright.

Moses Whisman enlisted at Estill Springs, Kentucky into the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Company G, on October 14, 1861 to serve 3 years. He was 26 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, Fair complexion, Blue eyes and Dark hair. He was a Farmer by occupation. He is listed as a Musician (his granddaughter, Mary Eugenia (Whisman) Davis always said he was a Bugler).

He was discharged March 2, 1863 at Nashville Tennessee because he was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier. During the last two months of service he had been unfit for duty 60 days.

On January 5, 1880, he appeared before the Clerk of Lee County, Kentucky and made application for a Declaration for Original Invalid Pension.

In the application he states that he is 43 years old, a resident of Beattyville, Lee County, Kentucky. That while a member of the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Company G, that in the line of duty at Stone (illegible) (probably Stone River) in the State of Tennessee on or about the 6th of July, 1862 contracted disease of the lungs the result of cold and exposure in the Army from the effects of (illegible) which was contracted at (illegible)(maybe Irvine) Kentucky on or about the 30th of November 1861. Said disease has settled in both lungs. That he was treated at Murfreesboro Tennessee College Hospital(illegible)(maybe, month not known) not (illegible) from about the 7th of July, 1862 until September 3, 1862 and in (illegible) Nashville, Tennessee from about September 4th, 1862 until January 18th 1863 and that he is now ¾ disabled.

Moses Whisman is my Great Grandfather.
