WOODVILLE, this day
A serious assault took place in the Central Hotel last evening.
A swagger entered the kitchen and the landlord, Mr Bottomley, ordered him out. He refused to go and when the landlord tried to eject him the man turned round and struck him in the face with a lid of a billy, inflicting a serious gash.
Mr Bottomley closed with the man, but after a struggle the swagger got away.
The police arrested him at four o'clock this morning on the main road.
He had two bottles of beer which it is presumed he stole from the Mayor's residence, as a robbery took place there early this morning.
The man was brought before the Court this morning and remanded till Tuesday, Mr Bottomley's injuries being too serious to permit his attendance
NOTE - the swagger was sentenced to 2 months for assault, an additonal week for refusing to leave the premises and another 7 days for stealing a number of bottles of beer from the Mayor's residence
Bush Advocate, 15 May 1909
The death is announced of Mr J. Bottomley, a well known and popular hotel proprietor of Woodville
