Veteran of the 7th U.S. Cavalry- Battle of the Little Big Horn. Born at Ballinlough, County Rascommon, Ireland, the son of Michael Newell. Learned the blacksmith trade in London, emigrated to America in 1870. Enlisted 7th Cavalry on October 8, 1873, at age 25. Appointed blacksmith on July 1, 1876. Fought in the valley and hilltop fights on the Little Big Horn, June 25, 1876. Wounded in the left thigh in retreat from the river. Discharged on October 8, 1878, at Camp Ruhlen, Dakota Territory, as a private of 'good character.' Post blacksmith at Ft. Meade, D.T. from 1879 TO 1884. Married Mary M. Harlow on July 9, 1882. Served on Sturgis city council and school board. Attended the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn held at the Custer Battlefield on June 25, 1926. Died at age 86 on September 23, 1933, at the National Military Home, Hot Springs, SD.
