James R. Villers, 94, of Washington, known by all as "pappy", died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, in the Washington Hospital. He was called home on the birthday of his first wife, Frances.
He was born December 18, 1928, in Mannington, W.Va., a son of the late Eli Spencer Villers and Rosa Leasure Villers Brewer. He is the last of his immediate family.
Jimmy worked in maintenance at Findlay Refractories for 34 years, from where he retired. He then worked as a crossing guard for Trinity West Elementary School.
He was a life-long member of the New Hope Church of God of Prophecy, Washington. He was a self-taught guitarist and singer, and played for services at church. His favorite music was gospel and he and his family often sang gospel as a group. He often provided transportation to church for those who needed it. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and loved spending time with family.
Jimmy was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
He married Frances Phillips, who passed in 1978.
On January 4, 1980 he married Margaret Martin Ashcraft, who survives.
Also surviving are five daughters: Judy L. (Edwin) Yeater, Sandra D. (Joey) Nuzum, Rhonda K. (Dave Pruitt) Smith, Brenda D. (Tommy) Naraskivitch and Vicki L. Knox, all of Washington; nine grandchildren: Kandy, James, Kevin, Kristy, Angel, Klint, Travis, Jared and T.J.; several great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Kenneth Ashcraft of Washington State and Troy Ashcraft of Washington; a stepdaughter, Lori Risch of Washington; several step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his first wife and step-father, Archie, whom Jimmy called "dad"; are a son who died in infancy; three brothers, Charles, Raymond and Grover "Tommy' Villers; four sisters: Opal Bobbert, Edna Mae Thomas, Erma Praither and Ethel Anderson; a step-son, Gary Ashcraft; and a son-in-law, Michael W. Smith.
Friends will be received from 10 to 1 p.m., the hour of services, on Friday, in the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with pastors Titus Daniel Anderson and Ira Logan officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
