F. R. COOK Called By Death Last Friday
Cancer Is Cause Of Pioneer’s Passing
Death again struck the heart of Slope County last week when F. R .COOK pioneer resident of the southeast part of the county, passed away at the Dickinson hospital at 12:30, February 24, 1939. He was 67 years, 9 months and 37 days of age at the time of his death.
Cancer was given as the cause of death. Mr. COOK had been ill for about seven weeks prior to his passing, and had been confined to the hospital for some time.
Frank Ross COOK was born on April 29, 1871, to Samuel and Mary COOK, at Normal, Illinois and was educated at the Bloomington, Illinois, State Teacher’s college.
He resided at various places in Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota during his life, and was master of many occupations that he pursued during his lifetime. He has been a school teacher, telegraph operator, farmer, and businessman. During the later years of his life, he served as field worker for the Greater North Dakota Association, field man for the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation, and county supervisor of crop insurance for the US Department of Agriculture.
He was married on November 14, 1899 at Vienna, South Dakota, to Julia Faye Coe, who survives. Following his marriage the family resided at Vienna, Benson and Hancock South Dakota (actually Benson and Hancock, Minnesota D.S.) and at Mandan, North Dakota before moving to Slope county many years ago.
Mr. COOK was a member of the Christian church of Normal, Ill. Born to Mr. & Mrs. COOK were one daughter, Doris COOK Stowell, who now resides at Little Rock, Arkansas; Donald Hench COOK, of Scranton; and Ross Augustus COOK, who resides at Mohall, N.D.
Also surviving him are one grandson, Franklin Don Stowell, age 7 months; one sister, Mrs. Kate Heaton, Marshall, Texas, besides Mrs. COOK.
Funeral services for Mr. COOK were held at 2 p. m. on February 27, at the Pierce Congregational church, with Rev. Thorly Johnson is charge. The choir sang two numbers, and a violin solo, played by Rev. Johnson, furnished special music for the services. Interment was in the Pierce cemetery.
Pallbearers were D. E. Lawrence, New England; and Fred Belknap, Sig Simonson, Mike Pierce, Tom Stafford, and E. P. Wobig, all of the Pierce community.
Friends attending the funeral from a distance were Myra Willis, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Fanning, Rhame.
The entire county mourns the passing of Mr. COOK. No greater tribute can be paid to him than to say that he was one of the solid citizens of this community and this county. He formerly served his county as commissioner, and at the present time was a member of the local welfare board. These with his many other duties, kept him busy in the service of his fellowmen until the time of his last illness.
Mr. COOK was a member of New England lodge No. 111, A. F. & A. M., and his brothers in the lodge present assisted at his funeral rites.
A great man and a good man has passed. We who remain will look a long way and a long time to find one who can fill the place now left vacant by the passing of Mr. COOK. Eager to serve, straight-forward, honest, and faithful to any trust given to him, he served faithfully until death laid him low. No man can do more.
