LaRue Eldred Kirby, 86, husband of Shelby Keith Kirby, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Mr. Kirby was born, April 11, 1937, in Florence County, son of the late Dallas Durant Kirby and Olive Morris Kirby. He was the second oldest of five brothers. In July of 1957, LaRue married Shelby Jean Keith of Scranton and they began their fruitful marriage of 66 years with humble beginnings and a mutual desire to succeed. They had two children, Roger and Cheryl and later a son-in-law, Ted Walter and daughter-in-law, Pam Kirby whom they loved as their own.

Mr. Kirby was fondly known to many as "PaPa" or "Lash". He was voted "WITTIEST" in high school and this superlative remained true throughout his life.

Mr. Kirby began his career as a mail carrier and eventually as the Postmaster in Lake City. During his time with the US Postal Service, he traveled and taught master classes on communication and development of interpersonal skills and conflict resolution. Educating and mentoring others was a thread throughout his various careers and his long life.

Mr. Kirby joined the South Carolina National Guard at the age of 17. During his long career of 34 years, he became the First Sergeant of the 133rd. Battalion Armored Division. In this capacity he supported local efforts to provide GED equivalency education for the enlisted men from the area. Additionally, he was awarded numerous medals for service and excellence. While working in these careers, Mr. Kirby graduated from Francis Marion College in 1974 in Business Administration.

In 1990, Mr. Kirby formed Kirby Realty & Construction, Inc. where he was Broker in Charge. He was licensed as a South Carolina Residential Builder and a Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser. He was past president and long serving member of the Board of Directors of the Lake City Realtors and later the Pee Dee Area Board of Realtors. He served on the Florence County Economic Development Board for 16 years, the longest serving member of that board upon his retirement. He served as president of the Lake City Rotary Club and was awarded the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow for his many contributions.

Mr. Kirby was a long serving member and Deacon at the Lake City First Baptist Church. He believed in selfless service to God and Country, respect for all, and that a positive attitude was the cornerstone of achievement.

Mr. Kirby was born on a family farm and happily resumed farming in his later years, where he was able to instill invaluable life lessons to his children and his five grandchildren. If you had time to listen, he had a lesson just for you! He leaves a large, devoted family well prepared to continue in his absence. May we all remember his lessons that hard work, positive attitude, a commitment to excellence and love of God and family are the building blocks for a purposeful life.

Mr. Kirby, was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Ted Walter; brothers, Nelson Kirby, Ronald Kirby, LeGrande Kirby and Sammy Kirby.
