Reba Gene Nevels Casteel was born on November 3, 1936, to James and Ollie Nevels of Fackler, AL; the oldest of 6 children. She graduated from Jackson County High School in 1955.

In her spare time, she was an avid and successful bowler in several leagues. In the mid 1970s she became an EMT and worked in that role for several years. In the early 80s, Reba fulfilled her lifelong wish of becoming a nurse when she received her LPN degree from Drake State. She worked at Jackson County Hospital/Highlands Medical Center until her retirement at 80 years of age.

Reba was an active member of First Baptist Church of Scottsboro, where she was a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir. She joined the Scottsboro Lions Club in 2001 and was an active member for over 20 years.
