Abbie Barberio dies after illness
An active member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church and an active Demobrat, Mrs. Abigail M. "Abbie" Barberio, 73, of 713 Park Ave. died at 9:12 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 1989, at her residence following an illness.
She was the wife of George T. Barberio, and Ellwood City Borough councilman. They had marked their 54th wedding anniversary last Sturday as they were married March 18, 1935.
Mr. Barberio was a board member of St. Agatha Social Club, was a former member of the parish council and was past president of the church's Christian Mothers.
She was also a member of Court Ellwood 901, Catholic Daughers of America.
She had been very active in the Democratic party, serving as a committeewoman for over 30 years. She was minority inspector of electricions in the First Ward and was past president of the local Democratic Women's Club.
Daughter of the late George M. and Abby Curran Hughes, she was born March 13, 1916, in Ellwood City, in the house where she resided.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, G. Thomas Barberio Jr. of Ellwood City, Joseph J. of Cranberry Two. and John J. of Fort Collins, Colo.; three daughters, Margaret Ann Barberio and Mrs. George (Helen) Lippert, both of Ellwood City, and Gayle Balin of Great Falls, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Goerge M. Hughes of Lake Worth, Fla.
She was preceded in death by a brother, William Hughes who died in World War II; two sisters, Helen Keeley and Mary Newman; and a granddaughter, Christine Lippert.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturgay and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Joseph A Toman Jr. Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Agatha church by the pastor, the Rev. Thomas Kirby Entombment will be in St. Peter's Mausoleum at St. Agatha Cemetery.
Members of the CD of A and St. Agatha Christian Mothers will beet at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Sunday for a Christian Wake Service and are asked to meet at the church at 9:45 a.m. Monday to form an honor guard.
