An eclectic sportsman, he also excelled in Athletics, being National Champion three times in the 100 meters, once in the 200 meters and once in the Pole Vault. He became Sporting's first Olympic athlete, participating in the Stockholm Games in 1912, where he competed in the sprint events, achieving two 3rd places. He was also the first Portuguese person to compete in the Olympic Games. He also practiced cricket, fencing and tennis. A victim of syphilis, he died at the young age of 27, as a student of Medicine. His cause of death was, however, listed as "general paralysis".
