M. Herbert Madsen, 97, of Batavia, walked through the gates of heaven on May 31, 2023. Although his earthly family grieves, they are comforted by the knowledge he is with his Lord and Savior. He was born April 12, 1926, in Milwaukee, WI, to Mead and Bernita (Markofske) Madsen.

Soon after Herb's birth the family moved to Phelps, WI where he attended school and graduated from Phelps High School. On April 11, 1944, Herb enlisted in the US Navy and served as a radio operator during World War II. After the war, Herb graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a degree in accounting. He began his career with Ernst and Ernst in Chicago, but always remained a humble small-town boy from Phelps, WI.

On April 22, 1961, he married the love of his life, Helen Towers. They formed an incredible team with their compassion and generosity, touching many people's lives. Prayer and devotions were a passion of his. A day at the cottage in the Northwoods did not begin until prayer for his children and grandchildren, friends, and many missionaries they knew had been completed.

In 1976, his career took his family to Walla Walla, WA, where he worked for Nelson Irrigation Corporation. He was proud to know and work with four generations of the Nelson family. Herb retired in 1993 with a move to Kirkland, WA to watch his grandson, Christopher, grow-up. In 2003, he moved one more time to Batavia, IL to watch his other grandchildren, Kirsten and Trey grow-up. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family, especially at the lake cottage he built with his father and brother.
