González Casanova obtained his bachelor's degree as a Lawyer from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1947. Throughout his career, González Casanova was actively involved in academia and has held various academic positions. He served as Director of the National School of Political and Social Sciences (1956-1965), Director of the Institute for Social Research at UNAM (1966-1970), and Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (1970-1972). He also was a professor at several prestigious institutions, including Cambridge University and the UNAM, where he founded the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Humanities, later renamed the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sciences and Humanities.
