William Byrd Ratliff, 76, only child of the late Albert and Pearl Ratliff was born in Jacksonville, FL on September 3, 1927. He lived in Springfield until 1959 when he built his home in Neptune Beach, FL where he died on January 19 of a heart attack, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his helpmate of 50 years, Luella Johns Ratliff and longtime friend, Eleanor Wright, maid of honor at his wedding in Maleus Methodist Church near Jackson, Tennessee. Also surviving is a cousin, Harry Hardwick of Jacksonville. He retired from W.W. Grainger in 1990. A Mason for 50 years, he belonged to the Scottish Rite, Shriners and Lancers. He also belonged to the Elks and Moose. A member of the National Guard during WWII, he also served in the U.S. Army and saw action in the Korean Conflict. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 23, 2004, from 4 - 6 PM at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach. Private interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
