Carolina was the eldest child of Johann Nikolaus Matzenbacher and Margaretha Elisabetha Rech. On December 24, 1842, she married Philipp Jung in Gries. At the time, Konken (where Carolina was born) and Gries were neighboring farming villages about 14 kilometers apart. Today, they are small towns within the Kusel district in the Rhineland-Palatinate of Germany. Caroline and Philipp's children, Carolina and Philip, were both born in Germany prior to the family immigrating to Canada in 1855. After arriving in Ontario, they made their home in Carrick Township in Bruce County.
