James' nephew (David's son, William) was murdered in 1883 and the verdict for his assailant in the case, caused the famous Cincinnati Riots of 1884.

James Kirk, aged eighty-one years, died Tuesday, September 12, at his home in at Villars Chapel. He was born in Yorkshire England, but with three brothers came to this county many years ago. He was a man of strict integrity and had accumulated a handsome living and a good farm. One son and a daughter mourn his loss, his wife having preceded him to that better land about thirteen years ago. Interment on Thursday.
