CARENCRO ~ Memorial services will be held Monday, May 22, 2023 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass in St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church for Cecil Gilbert, age 80, who passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Calcutta House in Lafayette.
Interment will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Carencro. The Rev. David Hebert, pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, will officiate at the services.
Cecil Gilbert was born on December 23, 1942 to Ned and Vivian Gilbert in Carencro, Louisiana. He joined the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge from the military, Cecil carried on a legacy and became a third-generation bus driver serving thirty years with the Lafayette Parish School System and twenty years with the private school system; the legendary bus #29!
Cecil had a personality you could not help but love and a heart of gold. He was kind, funny, and quick witted - destined to keep you on your toes. He enjoyed vintage cars, and spending time with his beloved family.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Olivier Gilbert of Carencro; one daughter, Eloise David of Carencro; two grandchildren, Alex Forestier and his wife, Aline, and Victoria Dale Monson and her husband, Brennen; his great grandchildren, Brayden, Wyatt and Lily Forestier, and Lumi Monson; one brother, Duke William Gilbert of Carencro; and his nephews, Adam Gilbert, Ronald James Gilbert, Steven Aubrey Gilbert, and Wade Patrick Gilbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned George Gilbert and the former Vivian Hollier; and two brothers, Donald Gilbert and Russell Gilbert.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 4:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.
