David C. Haynes was born in 1807 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Harriet P. Cathcart on November 10, 1836. After her death as a young mother on June 11, 1843, he married Isabella Doherty circa 1846. On April 17, 1839, he inherited from his mother, Sarah Carruth, 60 acres of land from the Haynes Plantation. He served as the administrator of his mother's estate and purchased an additional 57 acres of the 493 acre plantation of his father, Bartholomew Haynes. He was farming this land when he died at the early age of 50. He was buried on the land he owned on Sugar Creek in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
