Jean Marie (Baxter) Mallonee
November 19, 1925 - April 29, 2021

Jean Marie (Baxter) Mallonee passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the age of 95 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Born November 19th, 1925, she was raised in Cushing, Iowa, the only child of Florence (Milne) and Charley Baxter. After graduating high school at the top of her class and delivering the commencement address, she attended Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa, where she obtained a degree in education and also met her husband of over 50 years, Howard, on a blind date. They married in 1948 while she also began a 40 year career teaching business subjects in Woodbine, Deloit, Ar-We-Va, and Denison, only pausing after the births of her three children until they began school. Practicing what she always told her students (never stop learning!), Jean obtained her Masters Degree from the University of Iowa in Business Education at the age of 50. In her leisure time, she was Worthy Matron in Eastern Star, and her many hobbies included hiking / walking, reading, and music, including being a member for many years of Sweet Adelines. She provided her time to many of her favorite volunteer opportunities including TAP food pantry and the Norelius Community Library. She was a member of the Denison United Methodist Church for over 65 years, forming many friendships there which included one of her favorite pastimes later in life, quilting, making many hand-sewn quilts for family and friends. After retiring in 1987 from Denison Community High School, Jean started traveling the world with family and friends, creating many memorable experiences. Jean also enjoyed time with her neighbors, many of whom raised their families together and have known each other since she moved to Denison in 1955. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Howard. She is survived by a daughter Darleen Kasian, son Darrell, and son Dan (Rebecca), all currently living in Cedar Rapids. Her granddaughter, Torin (David) Zach and great granddaughter Grace reside in Des Moines. Barbara Britten, a close cousin and part of the family, lives in Milwaukee. She always loved having family together and will be greatly missed. At Jean's request, there will be no formal services. The family requests that memorials be made to the Norelius Community Library.
