Dorothy Wortman Austin, 90, of Dyke, Virginia (formally of Charlottesville, Virginia), passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Mountain View Nursing Home in Madison County, Virginia.

Born January 25, 1933, she was the daughter of the late John P. Wortman and Lillie Mae Wortman of Lawndale, North Carolina. She graduated from the Shelby Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. After graduation, she was employed as an RN at the Veterans Hospital in Durham, North Carolina for several years until her marriage to Harry A. Austin II of Charlottesville, Virginia in 1957. Dorothy then worked at Martha Jefferson Hospital as an operating nurse until starting her family in 1961.

Dorothy was a devoted wife for 65 years and a loving mother to her three children. Kind and generous, she lived in faith and was active in the church throughout her life. Dorothy loved music, gardening, her friends and the simple joys of life. She was a prolific writer of wonderful letters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Betty Bridges, Martha Sue Clary and Charlie E. Wortman.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Harry A. Austin II; three children, William M. Austin III of Tampa, Florida, Harry A. Austin III and his wife, Nancy, of Dyke, Virginia, Betty A. Austin of Shelton, Washington; two brothers, Manuel Wortman of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and John P. Wortman Jr. of Shelby, North Carolina.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for the loving care and kindness provided to Dorothy by the staff and nurses at Mountain View Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church in Earlysville, Virginia on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in Deese Hall. Burial will be private.
