Carl Irwin Fonnesbeck
Carl Irwin Fonnesbeck was born on May 7, 1931 in Logan, Utah, the son of Carl Marinus and Emily Godfrey Fonnesbeck. He passed away peacefully on January 29, 2023.
As many of his family, friends and caretakers can attest, Carl lived an exceptional life.
He attended schools in Logan, Utah and graduated from Logan Senior High School.
He graduated from Utah State University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Air Force R.O.T.C. and following graduation from USU, entered the Air Force where he had both active and reserve duty. He was a pilot and flew a wide variety of propeller and some of early jet trainer and fighter airplanes put into service and always looked longingly at every plane that flew overhead He had a lifelong passion for all types of airplanes and flying, including his hobby of building and flying rubber-powered free-flight planes. In June of 2022, Carl was able to enjoy the front gunner seat in a commerative B-17 flight that flew out of Logan's airport.
Carl married his high school sweetheart, Helen Ruth Nelson on May 14, 1953 in Logan, Utah. They bounced around through any stops in their life together in Utah, Arizona, California and Washington, but always viewed Utah as home.
After leaving the service, Carl worked as a civil engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation and then later for the U.S. Forest Service. Carl spent his entire professional life in the service of the U.S. government.
Carl was very involved in scouting and served as Scout Master in the Logan 2nd Ward and was an Eagle Scout. He taught many hunter safety classes in Logan.
Carl was a man of many passions. (airplane building/flying, hunting, fishing and skiing). He loved music and was a voracious reader. Carl, Ken and Kristen completed an Iron Man Triathalon.
Carl is survived by his sister, Frieda Smith, and his son, Kenneth Fonnesbeck (Sheri) and his daughter, Kristen Fonnesbeck. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth, his son, Kraig Fonnesbeck and his beloved canine guardian angles Lucky (angel is a bit of a stretch), Ginger, Sandy, Max and Cassie. He leaves behind three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Logan Cemetery at a future date when the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming in Logan, Utah. Please keep in touch with Ken and Kristen for further information.
