First, an explanation of the photo of Sarah's gravestone, it is actually comprised of two photographs. On the left is a tall, narrow gravestone. That is a complete front view of her stone. Next to the tall gravestone is an enlargement of the inscription on her stone.

From her father's family Bible we learn that Sarah was the daughter of George and Sarah Petree Braden, born on July 8, 1829. The Bible also tells us that she married John M. Butler in 1853. Her brothers and sisters were John, Cornelius, Rebecca, Mary, Elija, Hannah, Katherine, George, Jr., Andrew J. and Luiza Jane.

Sarah and John Milton (aka John Marion) were indeed married in 1853 on August 18 in Campbell County. He was the son of Robert and Nancy Meador Butler. During the Civil War, John served the Union as a Private in Co B, 11th TN Calvary, with five brothers. John and his brother Henry died at the Depot Field Hospital, aka Hospital No. 1, at City Point (Prince George County, VA) and are buried at Annapolis National Cemetery, Maryland.

Sarah raised their three children alone: James Robert 8/20/54 (m. Molly Snodgrass), he was High Sheriff of Claiborne County in 1894-1896; Martha Ann b. 4/29/1860; and Sarah Elizabeth b. 10/4/1861 (m. Robert Wylie).
