Carol Sommers
May 25, 1932 - May 4, 2023

Surrounded by family and friends, Carol Sommers passed away peacefully on May 4, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas just days prior to her 91st birthday. She was born in Strandquist, Minnesota to Adolph Michael Kleinvachter and Gladys Miranda Holmstrom, being the 4th of 10 children.

Carol attended Lincoln High School, in Thief Rivers Falls, MN and graduated in 1949. She loved performing in various school productions, earning honors in the National Thespian Society. Upon graduation, she married George Arthur Sommers on November 10, 1949. Together they embarked on their journey of life, and she proudly supported him in completing a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and later a master's degree in hospital pharmacy. George entered the United States Army Medical Services Corps in 1954 and their 30 years of life in the military began. They traveled extensively from Washington D.C., to Germany, returning to the USA with assignments in El Paso, Denver and San Antonio, ending up in Washington D.C. In 1991 they retired and moved to San Antonio, TX.

An extraordinary wife and mother, Carol was completely devoted to her husband and children. She was instrumental in George's success and promotions, culminating in his final position as the Consultant in Pharmacy to the Surgeon General of the United States Army.

Memories of each of their assignment locations were made with friends enjoying Carol's culinary skills and loving her baked goods of which rhubarb pie was a favorite. Her sewing skills made her girls the best dressed. Her sense of humor and dry wit always kept things on a high note.

Many summers were spent at their beloved cabin on Lake of the Woods, MN playing cards, fishing for Walleye Pike, cooking, gardening, picking berries, gathering rocks to fortify the shoreline, and looking for bear tracks and deer. Another of her favorite activities was spending time in Ocean City, MD with her daughters, their friends, and the family dog. Carol had a tremendous devotion to the Lord and with her servant's heart put all others' needs ahead of her own.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George, her parents, and siblings James, Lucille, Dennis, and Robert Kleinvachter. Carol is survived by her two daughters, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She is also survived by five of her siblings.
