Helen Gertrude Mason, age 86, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., passed away March 9, 2008.
She was born on Sept. 12, 1921, in Birmingham, Ala., to Millard and Clara Simmons Eagerton. Mrs. Mason was a resident of DeFuniak Springs since 1952. She graduated for Okaloosa-Walton Community College with an associate degree and attended the University of West Florida. She was employed with the Walton County Health Department and the First United Methodist Church. She also worked as a bookkeeper and a receptionist with the Walton County Sheriff's Department from 1966-1992 before retiring.
Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Clarke Mason; one brother, Horace T. Eagerton; and great-grandson, Andrew Van Long.
Mrs. Mason is survived by her two sons, J.A. "Brick" Mason and wife Martha of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Richard Mason and wife Renee of Seligman, Ariz.; one daughter, Mitzie Irvine and husband Phil of Vestavia Hills, Ala.; two sisters, Faustine McBride of Pensacola, Fla., and Margaret Albritton of Savannah, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Karen Mason Woods and husband John, Charles Allen Mason, Heather Mason, Monica Mason and husband Steven Montz, Phillip Irvine Jr. and wife Ellen, Anne Irvine Long and husband Bruce, Ryan Mason and Robert Mason. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Nora Woods, Mason Woods, Sarah Long, Clark Irvine, Lyle Irvine and Len Irvine.
Visitation services will be conducted from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church, 88 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob West officiating.
Burial will take place at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Mason, Phillip Irvine Jr., Ryan Mason, Robert Mason, Phil Irvine, Steven Montz, Bruce Long and John Woods.
