Kay was born in California while her father was in the U.S. Marines. The family soon moved back to Iowa where her parents were from. When she was younger, Kay liked to say she was a California Girl. Truly, though, she was an Iowa Girl through and through. Raised in Sheldon (Class of 1983, Go Orabs!) Kay moved to Rock Valley after she married. There she raised her daughter Courtney with her then husband, Alan Ver Steeg. Kay made many friends in Rock Valley. She worked at Valley Machining Company from 1990 until the time of her death. Kay enjoyed her job and her co-workers. She returned to Sheldon in 2015, where she was near her mother, sisters and loving brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
Kay was an avid sports fan. She LOVED football (Go Vikings! Go Hawkeyes!) and any sport her daughter or grandchildren played. Kay liked a good book, preferably while in a lounge chair next to a pool in some place warm and lovely. And she loved to get together with family and friends for food, fun, and laughs. And turn up those tunes!
Kay's first trip to Mayo Clinic was at the age of 16, when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Battling that, Kay developed a resilient spirit and was a medical fighter to the end. After struggling to recover from major surgery in March, she finally faced a medical foe she couldn't beat. Kay passed away quietly at Methodist Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Her daughter and sisters were with her at the time of her passing. She will be remembered for her endurance and strength, her laughter and her LOVE.
Kay is wearing a pearl pendant necklace that was a gift from her daughter, symbolizing the GRIT that made her the PEARL that she was.
She is preceded in death by father, Gerald King and a niece, Caitlin Davis.
