He was a 31-year-old farmer born in Sullivan County, Indiana, and was 5 feet 8 inches tall and had blue eyes and brown hair. The 123rd mustered in on December 10, 1863, at Terre Haute, Indiana. John was promoted to Corporal June 15, 1865. He was mustered out on August 25, 1865, at Lexington, North Carolina.
