Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (June 7, 2023):

SIERRA VISTA—Vicki Monken, 81, beloved wife and mother, passed away on the 17th of April 2023 after living with dementia for many years. Vicki was born in Tipton, Indiana, where she met her husband in a swimming class at college.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, George Monken; son, Christopher Monken and daughter-in-law Lisa Monken; and daughter, Rebbecca Monken.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Annabelle Shuck; and sister, Donna Geer.

Vicki was an accomplished knitter, crocheter, needle pointer, and tater. Vicki worked as a bookkeeper throughout her husband's career in the military. While living in Texas, she would read to Chris and Becca and their friends when it was too hot for them to play outside. When the children were around six-seven, Vicki took them and their friends to the library so they could get a library card.

She also enjoyed singing, getting to sing in numerous choirs and musical groups. She was fortunate, as a member of the German — American Choir in Frankfurt, West Germany, to be able to sing in the Alte Oper Frankfurt (Old Opera House) shortly after it was restored after almost being destroyed by an arsonist.

A memorial service will be held at the Southern Arizona Veterans' [sic] Memorial Cemetery at 10:00 AM on the 5th of June 2023.
