MARIE ROYAT OBITUARY
The death of Marie Reusser Royat on October 26, 2017, closes a chapter in the history of Browns Valley. Born to John and Eva Rice Reusser on September 2, 1922, Marie lived in the Marigold area of Hammonton, where John worked on the dredger. With his unexpected death in 1930, Eva moved Marie - 7, Kenneth - 6, and Leland - 5, back to her native Browns Valley family farm on Bald Mountain Road.
Marie and her brothers grew up amidst orders from their grandmother, mother, and various uncles. The family had dairy cows, and cream was sold for income, while Eva taught school. Marie graduated from Marysville High School in 1939, attended Yuba College, and eventually graduated from Chico State College. She returned to the farm after WWII began, to help when her brothers enlisted in the military.
In 1943, she married Ellis Royat of Dobbins, and moved to Tempe, AZ, where Ellis was stationed in the Air Force. From there, they spent an extremely cold winter in Lincoln, Nebraska, and returned to Santa Rosa Air Field until the end of the war. They lived at 3 local PG&E powerhouses where Ellis was an operator until the Korean War began. He was recalled to Mather AFB in Sacramento, where he again repaired bombers as a mechanic. Marie and Ellis lived on the Royat family ranch in Dobbins with their two children, until 1978, when they retired back to the Rice Ranch in Browns Valley.
She began a 30+ year teaching career in Dobbins, leading students in music. Her elementary schoolroom teaching over the next years was in both Browns Valley and Loma Rica. Many of her students look back on her as a remarkable teacher.
Marie was an accomplished pianist, and could play all kinds of music, in any key, with or without printed copies. In the 1940's and '50's, she joined many impromptu dance bands, and later served as church organist in Dobbins, North San Juan, and Marysville Methodist Churches, along with extra Sundays in various other churches.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dolores and Clarence Wager of Alturas; and son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Deb Royat of Chico; along with several nephews and nieces to the fourth generation. A Memorial service is scheduled for November 11, 2017, at 3:00 PM at the Marysville United Methodist Church.
