U.S. Grant was taught by him at West Point.∼Educator and Artist. Weir studied art in New York and Italy before he was appointed as a Teacher of Drawing at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He remained a professor there for 42 years, from 1834 to 1876. In this position, he taught many of the men who would later fight in the US Civil War, as well as men who would later become artists themselves, such as James McNeill Whistler
and Seth Eastman. Considered part of the Hudson River School of artists, Weir's works dealt mainly with historical subjects. His painting "The Embarkation of the Pilgrims" hangs in the rotunda of the US Capitol Building. Of his 16 children, two sons becames reknowned artists - John Ferguson and Julian Alden Weir.
