He was born on April 4, 1939, in Danville, VA to the late Lillie Davis Gery and the late Melvin Lee Gery.
He was also predeceased by the love of his life, his loving wife of 59 years, Nancye Richardson Gery.
In addition to his loving wife and parents, Melvin was predeceased by a brother, Fred "Freddie" Monroe Gery.
Left to cherish his memories are his son, Doug Gery Jr., and wife Melissa of Danville, VA; two grandchildren; Gabrielle Gery Decker and husband Ty, and Matthew Joseph Gery and his special friend, Ally Elliott; and one great-grandchild; Lillie Gray Decker.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 11:00 am, at Norris West End Chapel, Danville, VA, with pastor Bob Yeaman officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6 to 7:30 pm at Norris West End Chapel. The family will receive friends at other times, at the residence of his son, Doug Gery Jr. at 258 James Road, Danville, VA 24541.
