BELEW, Mahala GALYEAN - Mahala Belew, wife of J.H. Belew, died at her home in Hiwasse Wednesday, June 27th, 1928, aged 76 years, eight months and seven days. Mahala Galyean, daughter of Shadrick and Ruth Galyean, was born in Grayson County, Va. October 20th, 1851. Coming with her parents to Benton County, Ark. in 1859 she lived in and near Hiwasse until her death. In 1870 she was untied in marriage with J.H. Belew. To this union were born four sons, all of whom grew to manhood near Hiwasse. One son, Tillman, died August 22nd, 1926. Lee, W.H. and J.A. all live near Hiwasse and were with their mother during the many weeks of her last illness and when death came. She became a Christian in 1873 and was faithful to her Master unto the end. "Aunt" Hala, as she was generally known, was stricken with tuberculosis of the bone 50 years ago and was practically an invalid since that time, the last 12 years of her life having been spent in a wheeled chair. Besides her four sons, "Aunt Hala" reared a niece, Gertie Wages Duncan, who now lives at Fayetteville, Ark. Left an orphan at an early age, Gertie was loved and cared for in the Belew home as if she had been a daughter and her affection for her aunt and uncle is as great as a daughter's could be. She was with Aunt Hala constantly during her last illness and lovingly ministered to her. Besides her aged husband, who gave her every care a loving companion could bestow, and her sons, she leaves to mourn her departure a brother, Alex M. Galyean, and three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Croxdale, Mrs. R.F. Nichols and Mrs. Edna J.Wells; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as hosts of friends. Contributed. {Benton County Herald - Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas - July 5, 1928][Benton County Record & Democrat & Sun - Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas - July 5, 1928]
