Actor. He was best known to both television and film viewers for the numerous character roles he had on both the "small" and "big" screens during a career that spanned seven decades. He began his acting career in the 1960s, performing with the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco. In 1963, he made his television debut, in an uncredited role on the series "Dr. Kildare." He went on to appear in such series as "The Doris Day Show," "Ironside," "M*A*S*H," "Starsky and Hutch," "The Rockford Files," "Hill Street Blues," "Courthouse," and "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit." He made his film debut in 1970 flick "Alex in Wonderland." His later film credits would include such titles as "The Candidate," (1972) "The Other Side of Midnight," (1977) "The Postman Always Rings Twice," (1981) "Eight Men Out," (1988) "Harlem Nights," (1989) "Barton Fink" (1991) and "Elf" (2003). He received an Academy Award Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1991 for his performance in the film "Barton Fink."
