Melvin received his education at Lincoln High School in Ruston, Louisiana. He received Christ at an early age. In his youth, he attended Pleasant Grove C.M.E Church under the pastorate of Reverend M. Woodson. Melvin later united with Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. Paul A. Stewart.
During his career, Melvin worked as a construction worker. He moved to California and lived amongst his siblings who lived in Northern and Southern California.
Left to cherish his memory are Cannon Garr (Gussie) of Los Angeles, California; Hertis Garr of Ruston, Louisiana; Julie Ann Taylor of Los Angeles, California; Herise Francis of San Francisco, California and George Gaar (Bobbie) of San Francisco, California, dear friend Mr. Emmerson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
