Viola Hipp was born in Colbert County, Alabama, the daughter of Wiley C. Hipp (1854-1876) and Mary Jane Martin (1855-1934). Her mother married Reuben R. Bishop in 1878. Shortly thereafter the family returned to Mt. Zion, the home of Viola's maternal grandfather, Dr. Hicks Martin. She married James Lemuel Gammon on 26 Nov 1893. The Gammons had nine children: Wiley, Lavada, Rosa, Lilly, Mary, Myrl (J. M.), Millard (Jack), Thomas (T. H.), and James (Red).
