Enlisted July 21, 1862, at age 19; mustered in as a private with Co. A, 129th New York Infantry, which became the 8th New York Heavy Artillery on December 19, 1862. He was wounded June 3, 1864, at Cold Harbor, Virginia, mustered out with his company June 6, 1865, at Munson Hill, Virginia.
