According to William E Moore and David B Nolan, QUEST FOR FREEDOM: The Scots-Irish Presbyterian Rebellions for Political and Religious Freedom (William Moore, 2013), James Gillespie received military land grants for his service in the Revolutionary War. He gave much of his Tennessee land grants on the Little River, Duck River and Lick Creek, in what is now Maury County Tennessee to his son-in-law Joseph Dickson.
