Film Industry Figure. He was a Hollywood film director, writer, and producer. Starting in the silent film era, he wrote "The Kentuckians" in 1921. He directed "Roman Scandals" in 1933, "Charlie McCarthy, Detective" in 1939 and his final film "Island of Lost Women" in 1959. He produced five films before 1939. He was educated at Yale University, where he edited campus humor magazine "The Yale Record" before going to New York and then Hollywood. During the McCarthyism years, his career was greatly impacted by House Un-American Activities Committee as he had become a member of the Communist Party in 1937. He had to move to France to find work and eventually, gave to the committee 36 names of other interesting parties. According to critics, he returned to Hollywood finding work but never had the opportunity or maybe the talent to produce greatest as he had first inspired. He married a Russian ballerina and had three daughters.
