Joel King was the son of John Nicton King (b. 1831-d. aft 1900) and Nancy Elizabeth (Nations) King (b. 1831-d. aft 1900). His paternal grandparents were Wiley King and Margaret (Adair) King of Little Greenbrier Cove in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevier County, Tennessee. After his father served in the Union Army during the Civil War, the family moved briefly to Scott County, Tennessee (1870 U.S. Census), and then to Campbell County, Tennessee (1880 U.S. Census), where the young men in the family worked in the coal mines. In Campbell County, Joel married Emily Davis. Their seven children were all born in Campbell County. Joel and several of his sons went to southern Illinois and southern Indiana to work in coal mines there. In the 1920 U.S. Census, Joel appears twice--once in Campbell County, Tennessee, with his wife and younger children, and a second time in Franklin County, Illinois, with two of his older sons. All were working in the coal mines in the town of Zeigler. In the 1930 U.S. Census, Joel and Emily and one of their sons and a few grandchildren were in Gibson County, Indiana. Though Joel is identified as a farmer in 1930, it was the coal mines that brought them to that area, and he originally worked in the mines as did his sons. Joel and his wife Emily are buried in Francisco, Gibson County, Indiana. Some of their children and grandchildren are buried there with them in the IOOF Cemetery.
