Miss Universe 1970, magazine publisher, television host. Malaret was the first Miss Universe from Puerto Rico and the first from the Caribbean. She appeared in the Argentinean film "Mami" (1971), opened La Femme, a clothing boutique in San Juan in 1973, and hosted the Latin American "Festival de la Canción OTI" song competition in 1975. In 2017, Malaret was awarded a star on the Paseo de la Fama de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Walk of Fame), not only for her historical win as Miss Universe, but for her years as the co-host of the television show, "Noche de Gala" and as the founder of two lifestyle and fashion magazines, Imagen (1986) and Caras (1998). In a 2023 New York Times article, it stated Malaret was known for her humble manner and belief as a Miss Universe winner she had a duty to her island of Puerto Rico to live a respectful life and represent the Puerto Rican people well. She died at age 73 due to a pulmonary condition.
