Doris Bixby was born in Torbrook,(Middlesex County) Nova Scotia. At age 12 she moved to Maldon, Massachusetts to live with her oldest sister after the death of her mother, Josephine (Baker) Dowell. At age 18 she moved to Thiells, New York where she was employed as a civil service worker in the office of Letchworth State School (a home for mentally-challenged children) where she met her husband, Irving Bixby, also employed by that institution. They were married and returned to their home in Rome, Pennsylvania to help Hannah Bixby, Irving's mother run a dairy farm, and where they remained for the rest of their lives. They had two daughters, Georgina Caryl and Cynthia.

Doris became a professional seamstress and, in later years, pie baker for the former Barnaby's Restaurant in Nichols, New York.
