The Rev. John Edwin Strickland, 85, died Friday at Palatka Health Care Center following a long illness.

He was born in Grandin and had lived in Putnam County since 1953. He was a Baptist minister for 42 years. He was a graduate of Melrose High School and Faith Temple Seminary in Jacksonmville. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1936. He served as pastor of Lemon Heights Baptist Church in Palatka from 1953-1963. In 1963 he started Faith Baptist Church in Palatka and was pastor until his retirement in 1978.

He is survived by his daughters, Mary Elizabeth Randal of Willis, Texas, and Martha Louise Thomas of Glen St. Mary, Fla.; sons, Chester Lamar "Bud" Strickland of East Palatka and Thomas Edwin Strickland of Leesburg; brother, Clyde Strickland of Palatka; sisters, Hazel Giddings of Palatka and Mabel Leslie of Middleburg; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church in Palatka with the Revs. Jimmy Stallard and Harry Varnadoe officiating. Burial will be in Paran Cemetery in Grandin.
