Husband of Laura K. Axtell. Went with his family to New York State in 1826 and five years later to Perry, Lake Co., Ohio. He studied law in Painesville, Ohio, and in 1837 was admitted to the Bar in Geauga Co., Ohio. He practiced his profession in Cleveland until his death. He was a man of acknowledged superior ability, brilliant talents and indefatigable devotion to his duty and his obligations. As a citizen he was one of the most exemplary of men--true to every instinct of justice and right. After suffering several years from liver trouble, which impaired his health and
weakened him in body and mind, he passed away on Aug. 20, 1861, at Copper Harbor, Lake Superior, while on a trip for his health.
