Billy was a coal miner having worked within the mining industry for over 53 years. During his tenure as a coal miner he held various positions and was proficient with each job he held. Billy was not one to sit idle for he liked to be productive and busy. He was proud of his career in mining coal.
When not busy, Billy loved to hunt and fish. Actually anything that involved being outside, that is where you would find him. He was also skillful when it came to gardening. He not only enjoyed gardening but loved to share his harvest with his friends and neighbors. Billy's laughter and personality were contagious, he loved people and people loved him. He will indeed be missed.
He is survived by his son Kevin Mapes; daughter Heather Fields and her husband Joseph; brothers Randy Mapes and his wife "Doe" and Robert Mapes and his wife Rose; sisters Bonnie Harris, Susie Grossl and her husband Ron, Kaye Hurley and her husband Benny, Penny Hager and her husband Gary, Ellen Charles and her husband Jimmy and sister-in-law Judy Mapes; grandchildren Cayden and Holden Fields, Cory Galloway and his fiancé Brianna Preston. Billy is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones and a community of friends including special friends, Don Wolford and Orville Wolford.

The family will begin receiving friends, tentatively, on Friday evening March 3, 2023 in the Barrenshee Church of God from 6:00–10:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held, tentatively, on Saturday March 4, 2023 in the church beginning at 12:00 p.m. with Pastors Bobbie Dale Wolford, Randy Casey and Benny Freeman officiating burial will then follow in the Freeburn Community Cemetery at Barn Hollow in Freeburn, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
