He was the son of Francis and Ann Maloney Gilles. He married Helen June "June" Gibson on Oct. 21, 1944. He had four sons, Mark Timothy Gilles (Erin), Gregory Lee Gilles (Janice), Robert Stephen (Carol), and Christopher Peter Gilles (Mary); one daughter, Patricia Mary Kathleen Wallet; twelve grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years as a Lt. Colonel. He piloted four types of bombers including two missions on "D-Day". He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross along with other combat medals.
