The late Mr William Riddler, who died at Petone on Thursday last, was one of the oldest settlers in the district. He arrived in Wellington by the ship Sit Thomas Parkes in the year 1842, Lord Henry William Petre being one of his fellow passengers. Mr Riddler was actively engaged in some of the skirmishes which took place during the Maori war and was one of the party who went out to recover the body of Mr Gillespie, when that gentleman was murdered by the natives at the Hutt. He resided on his farm at Petone for 35 years and never was outside the Wellington Heads since his arrival in the colony. The deceased gentleman leaves a large family, all of whom are doing well. The funeral will take place a 1 o'clock to-morrow
